Victoria Jones, husband Richard and children Liliana and Jack are loving life aboard their Riviera 395 SUV, Baci.
Victoria Jones never imagined that the sweet gifts of Baci chocolates from her husband Richard would inspire the name of their family’s first luxurious motor yacht, a Riviera 395 SUV. But for Victoria, yachting is much more than a romantic adventure; it’s an evolving journey of confidence, empowerment and teamwork.
“My husband used to read me the love notes in the Baci chocolates, and our kids love saying the name too – it’s Italian for kiss,” explains Victoria about the naming of Baci, the family’s sparkling new 395 SUV, berthed in Clontarf Marina, Sydney. “Before the Riviera, we had a tinny that we took out on a trailer. Baci is the first serious motor yacht we’ve had, so it felt like a bit of a leap and a little daunting, at least for me. Richard was quite proficient in boating and took lessons from Simon Don from Riviera, but I wondered how I was going to handle a motor yacht like this.”
What initially drew the family to the Australian boat builder was the Riviera family of owners and the great support provided by dealerships. In addition to gaining her NSW Transport boating licence, Victoria promptly enrolled herself in the R Marine Sydney Women in Boating workshop.
Baci was named after Richard used to read Victoria the love notes in the Baci chocolates,

Liliana and Jack adore the fun the family has when they stay overnight.
“I wanted to be actively involved with our family’s boating experiences,” she says. “A boating licence is important, but it doesn’t cover the practical elements of driving a boat. The workshop is a lot more involved, with hands-on training, and I gained a much deeper appreciation of what the skipper does and what goes into handling a boat.
“We learned to do everything, from starting it up to turning it off, how to respond to different emergency situations, handling ropes, fenders, manoeuvring and berthing, and using the GPS positioning system – which is amazing, by the way – because I know that if I feel panicked or need to stop the boat, it’s just the press of a button. I’ve been practising with my husband, and I feel much more confident doing it myself now, and Richard has more confidence in my ability to handle things. With the Volvo Penta IPS, the Riviera feels like an absolute dream to manoeuvre, even though it’s much larger than what we had before.”
Victoria is a business coach for female founders and understands well the role that confidence plays in any successful venture. In her experience, she’s found that women can suffer from perfectionism and overthinking, whereas men have a ‘give it a go’ attitude.
“Taking really small, actionable steps will help build that confidence on the water. I’d say just do one new small thing each day and practise that. Taking the cushion covers off, handling the fenders and the ropes, understanding an emergency plan – and then build your confidence to take on the larger tasks, like driving and manoeuvring into the berth.”

Victoria loves taking control of the family’s yacht – but doesn’t mind a glass of champagne once the work is done.
Victoria acknowledges that it can be tricky if one person in the couple is very confident at taking control. “Then we women tend to take a back seat and don’t bother trying. But I think, in an emergency situation, or if Richard needs to get one of the kids, we both need to know what to do. Women need to feel confident in taking control, and they need to be empowered by their partners to do so. I believe it’s a shared responsibility. I understand most of the systems now, and the aim is to take our SUV out by myself and feel confident doing that. Now it’s just practice.”
Perhaps one of the sweetest outcomes of Victoria’s journey to being a skipper is that it has immeasurably enhanced her time on the water. “I love to sit back with a glass of champagne as much as anyone else, but I’m loving the whole experience a lot more now because I’m more curious and interested in how things work. I love how luxurious the Riviera feels – more than our home! How safe and secure we all feel, and the kids absolutely adore the fun we have when we stay overnight. Having an active interest has made me far more grateful.”
