2008 - RIVIERA 70 ENCLOSED FLYBRIDGE

When the Riviera 70 Enclosed Flybridge was unveiled at the Sydney International Boat Show in August 2008, she was the star of the show.

Here was a cruiser that could comfortably accept the mantle of flagship. She offered four staterooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, a lounge and separate dining space, a massive flybridge that could accommodate all guests on board in style and comfort and power to reach 32 knots.

She was designed for long-distance cruising in extraordinary comfort, from the large cockpit and open mezzanine dining space to the saloon, compared favourably with a luxury apartment with its large leather lounge, dining space for eight and massive U-shape galley.

The flybridge alone offered more space than many luxurious cruisers, with helm and two companion chairs forward, a large lounge and wet bar aft. The skipper was provided with a second comprehensive helm on the flybridge aft deck for docking or fishing.

The accommodation deck offered a range of optional layouts with the standard being a full-beam master suite amidships including a king-size bed, hull windows, his-and-her wardrobes, lounge seating and en-suite bathroom. The VIP stateroom with queen double was immediately forward on the starboard side, also with en-suite bathroom. Twin berth cabins were in the forepeak and on the port side, each with en-suite bathrooms.

Boat show crowds had to be carefully controlled while buyers sat down to talk specifications and options. Riviera immediately began taking orders for the new flagship.

The media, too, were impressed.

She was reviewed in boating media in Spain, the United States, South Africa, Russia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.

Yachting magazine in the United States described the below-decks arrangement as “it works perfectly”.

Pacific Motor Yacht stated that she was “the most impressive and spectacular model I’ve been aboard”.

Docklines said the galley “would not be out of place in a harbourside mansion”.

Go Boating said: “this is a near perfect long range planing hull cruiser.”

Club Marine found “driving the boat to be quite liberating. I’d liken it to driving a ‘floating Porsche’ “.

She featured on the cover of Docklines, Trade-A-Boat and Go Boating magazines.

Launched only six weeks before the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers triggered the Global Financial Crisis, Riviera produced six of these magnificent boats over three years in production.
