2006 - RIVIERA 56 ENCLOSED FLYBRIDGE
When Riviera launched the 56 Enclosed Flybridge at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in 2006, it introduced a range of innovations that would percolate through the line-up.
She achieved significant fame when Riviera owner Ian Reynolds circumnavigated Australia in his 56.
Asia-Pacific Boating stated the 56 was: “a generation ahead in terms of design and construction”.
She was the first Riviera to be fully computer designed and moulded, ensuring a millimetre-accurate fit between hull, deck and superstructure. She introduced propeller tunnels to reduce shaft angle and therefore improve performance. There were underwater exhausts for the engines to reduce both noise and fumes.
The internal layout, too, was totally new for Riviera, drawing upon concepts from the recently-launched sport yacht – aft galley and an awning window between galley and cockpit. But the 56 went further, introducing an internal staircase to the enclosed flybridge.
The saloon area was dominated by the large U-shape galley with its additional return that made it feel separated from the saloon. The chef was offered a large solid surface benchtop, three-burner electric cooktop, two fridges and a freezer as well as overhead and under-bench storage. The dinette was forward of the galley with a lounge and coffee table opposite, to starboard.
She offered accommodation of three cabins and three bathrooms. The owner would choose between a midships master stateroom with queen walk-around bed and an oval-shaped fixed porthole or the forward stateroom, also with queen walk-around bed. Both included ensuite bathrooms with enclosed shower stalls. The third cabin on the port side amidships had access to a third bathroom that included a clothes washer and dryer.
The flybridge included a forward central helm with companion seat to port and, aft L-shape seating for guests around a timber table.
New Zealand’s Sea Spray magazine said she “adds a new level of lifestyle luxury living to cruising”.
She featured on the front cover of Trade-A-Boat, Go Boating, Pacific Motor Yacht, The Exporter and Modern Boating magazines.
The 56 Enclosed Flybridge was powered by twin Caterpillar C18 turbo diesel engines, with options of MTU or larger Caterpillar engines rated up to 1,575hp each.
