1997 - RIVIERA 4000 OFFSHORE
The Riviera 4000 Offshore, launched in 1997, was the first model in the line-up not to include a flybridge. Her sporty, raked wrap-around windscreen and targa gave her the appearance of a racer while the layout spelled comfort for skipper and guests.
Australia’s Modern Boating magazine wrote: “Riviera broke the mould, so to speak, when it released the low-profile 4000 Offshore sports cruiser”.
She was awarded Modern Boating magazine’s Boat of the Year in 1998, the fourth such award to a Riviera. BlueWater magazine featured her on the front cover.
She offered only one cabin, a well-equipped bathroom with separate shower stall and Vacuflush toilet, an L-shaped galley featuring an electric two-burner cooktop, microwave oven, under-bench fridge and moulded sink and drainer.
Opposite was the dinette, also L-shaped, that could convert to a second double berth.
However, the main attraction was the helm platform and the cockpit. The helm platform was designed for entertaining with a large L-shaped lounge around a table on the port side, a two-seater lounge along the starboard side immediately aft of the helm. The entire area could be open to the skies, with a canvas soft-top available for sun protection or inclement weather or covered by a hard-top. Aft and two steps down was the cockpit, a wide space with storage bins under the deck on either side. An optional live bait well in the transom converted this space to a fishing platform with the storage bins utilised as fish bins.
Engine-room access came via hydraulic rams that lifted the entire helm deck.
Power was provided by twin diesel engines and shaft drives. A series of engine options and ratings were offered over the production life of the 4000 ranging from Cummins 315 and 430hp, to Caterpillar 350 hp, 420hp and 435 hp.
The media and boat-buying public embraced the new concept.
Trade-A-Boat described her as “the Porsche Boxster of the bluewater”. The reviewer continued: “this boat offers more useable, better-integrated space . . . than many closed-door boats with rarely-used saloons and tiny outdoor living areas”.
